Exhibition Info
As part of the exhibition Knot Works: Presents, I designed and made a one-off Dress Coat in dead-stock British Wool Melton.
The coat construction was adjusted to work with the qualities of the cloth. The garment was assembled with lapped seams that expose the raw edge of the wool that does not fray. The selvedge is exposed on the edge of the pockets showing traces of how the cloth leaves the mill.
The firmness of the cloth gives a much more sculptural form than cotton. Melton wool is naturally very warm, hard wearing, water repellent and wind resistant yet breathable. For these reasons it has traditionally been used for naval garments.
Following the exhibition, this coat has become a staple of my winter wardrobe. Commissions in similar cloth can be requested. Email hello@hollyjean.co.uk to discuss your requirements.
