Edward Liddle and I studied a Foundation in Art and Design together in 2008 and this began a very good friendship which has led to starting a business together with Sam Wheeler, Knot Works.
Our mutual interest in the visual arts, materials and making led to our first creative collaboration in 2020, amidst the start/stop of multiple lockdowns.
Edward's practice is concerned with the re-interpretation of motifs and patterns from a range of sources and eras. These include architectural and domestic objects such as tiles, wallpaper scraps and fabric remnants, others from film or television programmes, first documented as screenshots.
A natural collaboration began by selecting a painted study of a motif, and a style of garment that would allow the motif to take on another life, with movement and drape.
The garment pattern was drawn by myself onto the remnant of linen cloth, passed over to be painted by Edward using a dotted grid as a guide, and returned to me to be assembled by hand and machine.
The alignment of the motif and the garment pattern was manipulated to allow for pattern matching and controlled mis-alignment.
